Sarina Piercy
Research Assistant

Sarina is a fourth year undergraduate student at the University of Alberta studying Political Science, Middle Eastern and African studies and Anthropology. She is interested in community-based sustainable development with a particular focus on indigenous rights and utilizing traditional knowledge as an integral aspect of development. Throughout her degree she has tried to pair theoretical knowledge with practical experiences, involving herself in diverse aspects of community development both within Canada and abroad. Sarina spent three months volunteering in Buduburam Refugee Camp, Ghana, working with youth empowerment, a women’s micro loan project, and helped to initiate a Liberian Repatriation Project through the Children’s Better Way local NGO. Recently, she has worked as a youth program coordinator in Beaver First Nation as part of the Alberta’s Future Leaders initiative. Sarina is also interested in sustainable agricultural practices and finds them central to community development around the world. She is honoured to be participating in Canada’s World because she believes that positive change stems from interdisciplinary dialogue.
