Canada's World / LRC Book Club

Some of the most provocative, well-informed and interesting debates about Canada's foreign policy play out in books - and in the groups of passionate readers across the country that gather to discuss them.

In order to help suggest foreign policy titles for book club and discussion group picks, Canada's World has partnered with the Literary Review of Canada (LRC) to showcase some interesting publications.  The LRC is the country's pre-eminent magazine of books and ideas, and each of the following titles has been the subject of a thoughtful review-essay in recent years - see below for links to the original articles, which provide further information about the books and are sure to spark conversation.  These works span the political spectrum, and are all accessible to interested non-specialists; but more importantly, they represent lasting contributions to the Canadian foreign policy discussion.

Intent for a Nation
by Michael Byers

With Intent for a Nation, UBC professor Michael Byers lays out his "relentlessly optimistic manifesto" for an across-the-board realignment of Canadian foreign policy.  He champions a firmly progressive stand on issues ranging from human rights and nuclear proliferation to northern sovereignty that he argues would position Canada as a world leader.

This slim book, by one of Stephen Harper's policy advisors, lays out a hard-nosed program for reforming Canadian foreign affairs.  We need to shake off our deluded national self-image as global do-gooders, Rempel argues, and tend to our citizens' practical needs.
